Nanaimo Marina Waterfront Fire

Explosion Heard Before Fire Erupts
At Nanaimo Marina Stewart Ave.

At approximately 1:00 pm there was a loud explosion followed by fire at the marina on Newcastle Channel along Stewart Ave.

Large plumes of billowing black smoke could be seen downtown and first thoughts were that it could have been at BC Ferries.

The fire was knocked down quickly with a rapid response from emergency personnel with I presume a fire boat being responsible for dousing the flames. The second from the bottom picture shows a stream of water being directed at the blaze.

Neither the cause nor extent of the damage was available at this time. Marinas filled with fiberglass containers filled with gasoline (aka boats) housed in wooden buildings is not a good place for a fire to get out of hand as it can spread unbelievably quickly.
