Indecent Exposure At Westwood Lake Reported

Nanaimo RCMP are issuing a public advisory after an incident of indecent exposure was reported yesterday at Westwood Lake.

The most recent involves a male seen masturbating in a neighborhood near Westwood. Investigators believe this person may be responsible for prior incidents at the lake. The suspect is described by a witness as being a white male, mid thirties to forties with a slim build and dark curly hair.

“Officers have identified several persons of interest but have not made an arrest in this matter. In the mean time the public is urged to be cautious and report any criminal activity in the area ,”said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.

Westwood lake is utilized by thousands of visitors each year who come to enjoy the swimming and many hiking trails. Unfortunately, there have been from time to time, incidents of indecent exposure at the lake . The following tips are provided for your safety:
  • when hiking or using the trails around the lake, take a friend with you and stay aware of your surroundings
  • keep an eye on who is approaching from the front and rear by every so often turning your head and looking behind and around you
  • if you choose to wear earbuds, keep them at a level so they do not interfere with your ability to hear who may be approaching
  • if you are confronted or see criminal activity , leave the area immediately and report the incident to the police.
