CHRISTMAS TRADITION SHATTERED

GIANT CANDY CANE - A FOND MEMORY

When I was a kid one of the highlights of what Santa left with the stocking was the biggest candy cane I had ever seen.  Wanting to carry on the tradition my wife picked up the handcrafted 17.6 oz. old fashioned candy cane from Laura Secord.

Those familiar with Canadian history will know that Laura Secord was a rather famous person in our early days. A company using her name has been making and selling confections for 100 years now, and while they don't seem to be as big as Purdys in Nanaimo, they are everywhere in Ontario.

SEEMS WE CAN'T MAKE ANYTHING ANYMORE

While looking at the ingredient list on the back of the package the candy came in I noticed it was not made in Canada as I presumed it would have been but was a product of PRC. It took a moment to realize that is the new code for Made in China.

We may have a lot of grandiose plans for driving our economy forward but when we have become a nation that can no longer make a Laura Secord old fashioned handcrafted candy cane....... would the last one out turn out the lights!
