Colliery Dam Spillway Progress Update - Nov. 10/15

"Completing the secant pile wall is a major milestone for the project. Once the auxiliary spillway and bridge structure construction is underway, the project team will focus on developing a project schedule for the remaining work."  -  Steve Ricketts City of Nanaimo

Work continues on the construction of an auxiliary spillway in Colliery Dams Park with the following milestones now completed.

Golder Associates and Herold Engineering drawings for the auxiliary spillway and bridge structure received approval by the Dam Safety Section on November 3rd. Engineers are now making the final revisions so the drawings can be issued for construction later this week.

Construction of the secant pile cut-off wall is complete. Copcan's subcontractor, Henry Drilling, finished the work November 4th and departed the site the following day.  The cut-off wall is anticipated to reach its required concrete strength by November 11th which will allow the excavation for the spillway and bridge structures to begin. The rain in the forecast may delay the start of the excavation to early next week. The concrete formwork, rebar placement and concrete pouring will follow the excavation.

With the completion of the secant pile wall and receipt of the "Issued for Construction" drawing, construction planning is underway for the remaining work.

It remains too early in the construction process to project the final construction costs.

Updates, including construction photos, concerning the Colliery Dams can be found on the Colliery Dams Information page located on the City's website.
